Slow Cinema Sundays is exactly what it sounds like. Once a month the cyc is blacked out, a screen goes up against the cove, thirty chairs come out, and we sit through a film that most rooms will not programme because it asks for too much time.
Chantal Akerman was twenty-five when she made this. It is shot almost entirely at eye level, in fixed frames, and for most of its length nothing happens except the ordinary work of a day. Then something does. It is not a difficult film. It is a patient one.
We start on time, there is one interval, and the conversation afterwards is the point as much as the screening is. Nobody is expected to have anything clever to say.
